Abstract:ThispaperfocusesontwoaspectsofromanticideasinAmericannovelistSaulBellow’snovelHendersontheRainKing,tryingtofigureouthowtheauthorexpresseshisromanticisminthenovelsothatwecangainbetterinsightintoit.Keywords:romanticideasspiritualsalvationpursuitprimitiveland一、RomanticismThetermreferstotheliteraryandartisticmovementsofthelate18thandearly19thcentury.TheRomanticMovementtypicallyassertstheuniquenatureoftheindividual,theprivilegedstatusofimaginationandfancy,thevalueofspontaneityover“artifice”and“convention,”thehumanneedforemotionaloutlets,therejectionofindustrialsociety,corruption,andadesiretoreturntonaturalprimitivismandanescapefromthespiritualdestructionofurbanlife.TheirwritingsareoftensetinruralorGothicsettingsandtheyshowanobsessiveconcernwith“innocent”characters---children,youngloversandanimals.ThispaperisintendedtoprobeintotheromanticideasinHendersontheRainKingtorevealhowhediscoveredhowprimitiveAfricaturnedhimintoahappymanaswellasthementioningofthechildrenandtheanimalsthatareoftenincludedinRomanticworks……
