摘要 Therelativeimportanceofeconomicsandenvironmentindebatemaysoonbereversedduetotheinfluenceofthreefac-tors.Firstly,intheglobaleconomyitishardtohidetheunwantedproductsofeconomicprocesses.Secondly,hugeadvancesinsci-encewillreducetheimperfectknowledgeofmarkets,makingsomemonitoringandanalyzingtoolsshowthedesignofsensibleandequitablelivelihoodincommunities,whichismoreimportantthanthemotivationofmaximisingprofitsforsomeindividualsorfirms.Thirdly,China,asthelastmajorplayerontheplanettotakeoneconomicgrowth,comesfromtraditionsfundamentallydiffer-entfromthoseeconomiesthathaveexperiencedtheIndustrialRevolutionpreviously.Itschallengeswithsustainabilityanden-vironmentalconservationpredateWesterneconomicsbymillennia,anditisimplementingpoliciesdomesticallyandstartingtoworkontheworldstagethatacknowledgesthatthesurroundingsarethehostforanyeconomicandsocio-politicalsystem.
