Melatonin reduces traumatic brain injur y-induced oxidative stress in the cerebral cortex and blood of rats

摘要 Freeradicalsinducedbytraumaticbraininjuryhavedeleteriouseffectsonthefunctionandantioxidantvitaminlevelsofseveralorgansystemsincludingthebrain.Melatoninpossessesantioxidanteffectonthebrainbymaintainingantioxidantenzymeandvitaminlevels.Weinvestigatedtheeffectsofmelatoninonantioxidantabilityinthecerebralcortexandbloodoftraumaticbraininjuryrats.Resultsshowedthatthecerebralcortexβ-carotene,vitaminC,vitaminE,reducedglutathione,anderythrocytereducedglutathionelevels,andplasmavitaminClevelweredecreasedbytraumaticbraininjurywhereastheywereincreasedfollowingmelatonintreatment.Inconclusion,melatoninseemstohaveprotectiveeffectsontraumaticbraininjury-inducedcerebralcortexandbloodtoxicitybyinhibitingfreeradicalformationandsupportingantioxidantvitaminredoxsystem.
