Lowpowerconsumptionisamajorissueinnowadayselectronicssystems.ThistrendispushedbythedevelopmentofdatacenterrelatedtocloudservicesandsoontotheInternetofThings(IoT)deployment.Memoriesareoneofthemajorcontributorstopowerconsumption.However,thedevelopmentofemergingmemorytechnologiespavesthewaytolow-powerdesign,throughthepartialreplacementofthedynamicrandomaccessmemory(DRAM)withthenon-volatilestand-alonememoryinserversorwiththeembeddedordistributedemergingnon-volatilememoryinIoTobjects.Inthelattercase,non-volatileflip-flops(NVFFs)seemapromisingcandidatetoreplacetheretentionlatch.Indeed,IoTobjectspresentlongsleeptimeandNVFFsoffertosavedatainregisterswithzeropowerwhentheapplicationisidle.ThispapergivesanoverviewofNVFFarchitectureflavorsforvariousemergingmemorytechnologies.
