Inthispaper,thecapabilityofIEEE802.11bDistributedCoordinationFunction(DCF)modesupportingofConstantBitRate(CBR)andVariableBitRate(VBR)VoiceoverIP(VoIP)trafficisinvestigated.Then,thecapacityof802.11bWirelessLocalAreaNetwork(WLAN)systemcarryingvoicecallsinawiderangeofscenarios,includingvaryingdelayandpacketlossrateconstraintsisanalyzedandevaluated.BothG.711andG.729voiceencodingschemesandarangeofvoiceinter-arrivaltimeareconsidered.Theanalysesandsimulationresultsshowthatcapacityishighlysensitivetothedelaybudgetallocatedtothesumofpacketizationandwirelessnetworkdelays.Foragivenpacketlossrateconstrained,G.729isshowntohaveacapacitygreaterthanthatwhenG.711isused.ThesimulationresultsshowthatbysupportingVBRunderDCFmodethenetworkhastheapproximatelytwicemuchcapacityassupportingCBRhas,regardlessoftheencodingschemesandtheinter-arrivaltime.
