Analternativemethodisproposedinthisletterfordescribingthearbitraryshapeandsizeforgranulesin2Dimage.Afterimagebinarization,theedgepointsoncontouraredetected,bywhichthecentroidoftheshapeinquestionissoughtusingthemomentcalculation.UsingPrincipalComponentAnalysis(PCA),themajorandminordiametersarecomputed.Basedonthesignaturecurve-fitting,thefirst-orderderivativeistakensoastoseekallthecharacteristicvertices.Byconnectingtheverticesfound,thesimplifiedpolygonisformedandutilizedforshapeandsizedescriptivepurposes.Thedevelopedalgorithmisrunontwogivenrealparticleimages,andtheexecutionresultsindicatethatthecomputedparameterscantechnicallywelldescribetheshapeandsizefortheoriginalparticles,beingabletoprovideaready-to-usedatabaseformachinevisionsystemtoperformrelateddataprocessingtasks.
